Assuming that the administration will be working on the budget shortly, I would like to open up the possibility of a government work program. First of all, let’s cut back on the military money proposal and keep in the social programs that the president might cut. Two areas that are needed to work on are unemployment and rebuilding infrastructure and they could be incorporated together.

I could envision a program of 12 to 48 months. Start with a one year stint but for those who would opt for 2, 3 or 4 years, offer them progressive bonuses after their 2nd year, then after 3rd year and finally when finished. (After each SUCCESSFUL year, these bonuses could be: after 1 year-$2,000, 2 years-$4,000, 3 years-$6,000, 4 years-$8,000.) Maybe there is a hint of bribery in this, but why not? I consider that this would be a very helpful program to get our youth involved and even have some money in their pocket prior to going into higher education. And, what about upon completion of a government stint, allow them to join the military with credit for those 1, 2, 3 or 4 years. How to fund it? There could be room in the budget if there is the will to have such a program.

With this symbiotic program we could help rebuild our infrastructure and certainly improve our persistent unemployment.
